Mary Courtenay Language Arts Center, a Chicago Public School, is located in the southeast section of the Ravenswood community.  We focus on language arts emphasizing a child-centered curriculum which incorporates reading, writing, languages (French and Spanish), speech, and technology supported by a strong neighborhood and family-based program.

Students in the primary and intermediate program follow the Chicago Public School's state mandated learning goals and academic standards.  They explore an enriching curriculum developed by qualified teachers and personnel.  To learn more about the special programs and services offered at Courtenay Language Arts Center, be sure to visit the About Courtenay page.

We have partnered with different community members to broaden the resources available to Courtenay students.  Previously, we have partnered with corporations and businesses such as the American Heart Association, Ravenswood Hospital, Bank of America, the University of Illinois at Chicago and Chicago Cares.  We have also established outreach programs with community groups such as The Girl Scouts of America.
Courtenay's partnership with the Kiwanis of Ravenswood has continued for at least 25 years.  Their support has included sponsorship of teacher workshops, computers, software, supplies, etc.  Mr. Barney Kearney, President, has been instrumental in providing the leadership for this dedicated organization.

We provide students with a variety of learning experiences.  In the past, we have hosted speakers such as Dr. Jeffrey Wigand, whose personal story was featured in the film, The Insider.  Our students have been involved in notable world-wide programs such as the JASON Project.

Our emphasis on language arts has also produced winners in the Regional Young Authors Competition.  Our recent Young Author winners are featured on the right.

Courtenay Language Arts Center is proud to emphasize that we meet/exceed the national norms in Reading and Math.
